American Idol 15: Top 24 #1

Idol is pushing right along at a faster than normal clip. This week we see 12 of the Top 24 perform solos and duets with former Idols.

This episode we saw the solos and tomorrow we have the duets and then 5 contestants are eliminated by the judges.

Stephany Negrete
"Mama Knows Best" by Jessie J
Stephany is dressed the part for this song. Her voice is good, but she doesn't really make me feel the song. Jennifer Lopez tells her "Don't forget the song in the show of it all." Judges were not bowled over by the performance.

MacKenzie Bourg
"Say Something" by A Great Big World
Mackenzie plays the guitar. This is the perfect song for his voice. I loved the minimal band accompaniment. This kid looks like a very young Kris Allen. I like him.

Jeneve Rose Mitchell
"Angel" by Sarah McLachlan
In the package we learn that Jeneve can play 12 instruments. For this performance she plays the harp. A nice talent but I don't like it with this song. It seems to be throwing her off a little. Either that or the whole arrangement is off. Harry didn't like the harp either. Keith thought she was very talented and Jennifer had goosies.

Jenna Renae
"My Church" by Maren Morris
I'm not familiar with this song but Keith is stoked about the choice. She sounds good. We really haven't seen that much of Jenna, so it is nice to have some idea what she is like. HArry thought she was shouting too much. I didn't really get that impression.

James VIII
"Love Lockdown" by Kanye West
James plays the guitar, again. He was ok, but nothing overly special. It probably doesn't help that I don't like the song in the first place. The judges thought the performance was lacking.

Sonika Vaid
"Safe and Sound" by Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars
Another song where she just stands at the mic and sings. Her voice is perfect for the song choice but she needs to put some life into the performances. Judges agree.

Gianna Isabella
"Put A Spell On You" by Annie Lennox
Pretty good job on this song. The judges tell her she has a great voice but she needs to challenge herself more.

Emily Brooke
"I Am Invincible" by Cassadee Pope
Total train wreck of a performance. She starts off too low and never gets any better. Pitcj problems throughout the performance. Totally the wrong song for her.

Avalon Young
"Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber
She does a good job on a simple sounding song. Judges suggest she tell the band to change up the arrangement more.

Jordan Sasser
"All By Myself" by Celine Dion
Jordan cut his hair. He looks so much better without the man-bun thing he had. Unfortunately he is back to the love-affair with Celine songs. Not a good move. Keith says too theatrical. Harry didn't like it either.

Thomas Stringfellow
"Creep" by Radiohead
Thomas is still playing his guitar. Good thing it works with this song. Great song choice. He sounds sincere when singing these lyrics. The audience and I connected to this performance.

La'Porsha Renae
"Proud Mary" by Tina Turner
La"Porsha is dressy very sassy for a larger woman. She does an awesome job on a very familiar song.
She is definitely the producers pick for this years winner. Harry- "One of two things is going to happen because of you being in the performance tonight; You're either going to make other competitors get better, or you're going to make them want to quit.

So after the solo round I think the five contestants to leave the competition should be: James VIII, Emily Brooke, Stephany Negrete, Jeneve Rose Mitchell, Jordan Sasser or Sonika Vaid.  I'm sure the judges won't agree with me on that.  We will have the see how the duets go.

I won't be posting the next results until Monday since I will be babysitting my 7 month old granddaughter for the next couple of days.
